Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion (EMHCs) are lay Catholics who assist in distributing the Body and Blood of Christ during Mass or to the sick/homebound. They exhibit reverence for the Eucharist, helping to ensure the dignified distribution of communion.
Primary Responsibilities During Mass
Distribute Holy Communion: They help distribute the consecrated bread and wine (Body and Blood) to the congregation at the direction of the priest.
Approach the Altar: They generally approach the altar after the priest has received Communion.
Handle Sacred Vessels: They may assist with the vessels containing the Eucharist and ensure respectful handling of the Sacrament.
Respectful Conduct: They must maintain a reverent posture, dress, and demeanor.
Additional Responsibilities
Bring Communion to the Sick: They take the Eucharist to parishioners who are homebound, hospitalized, or in healthcare facilities.
Purify Vessels: They may assist with the purification of the sacred vessels after Communion, depending on local guidelines.
Provide Blessings: When individuals approach with arms crossed (indicating they are not receiving communion), they may offer a simple, non-sacramental blessing.
Must be a practicing Catholic, often 18 years or older, who has received the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion).
If married, the marriage must be recognized by the Catholic Church.
Usually appointed by the Bishop or pastor to serve the parish.
