The Order of Christian Initiation for Adult (OCIA), formerly known as RCIA, is the Catholic Church’s process for welcoming new members, including unbaptized individuals, baptized Christians from other denominations, or baptized Catholics seeking Confirmation/Eucharist. It involves gradual conversion through study, prayer, and community immersion, culminating in sacraments at the Easter Vigil.

Key Aspects of OCIA:

  • Purpose: To guide adults in forming a relationship with Jesus Christ and understanding the beliefs, liturgy, and apostolic work of the Catholic Church.
  • Target Audience: Non-baptized adults, baptized Christians (non-Catholic) seeking full communion, and baptized Catholics who have not received First Communion or Confirmation
  • Stages of Formation: The process typically involves several stages: Inquiry (learning about the faith), Catechumenate (study and reflection), Purification/Enlightenment (intense preparation during Lent), and Mystagogy (post-baptismal reflection).
  • Duration: The timeline varies by person, often taking several months to over a year, allowing for a gradual, deep conversion.
